Time budget

There are 86,400 seconds in every day. How do you spend them? Excel can help you to find out.

1. Open a new Excel spreadsheet.
2. In cell A1 type your name.
3. In cell A2 type weekday. In cell B3 type hours.
4. In column A create a list of the things you do every weekday. School, sleep, eat, watch TV, homework, workout etc., the list goes on. Start in cell A4 and type one activity in each row. Choose at least six activities.
5. At the end of your list type TOTAL in the last cell of column A.

6. Now think about how you spend your time from 12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.- during an average 24 hour weekday. For each activity enter the number of hours and minutes that you spend during your day. For example, if you sleep for seven and a half hours in a 24 hour period enter 7.5.. Use decimal points to show hours and minutes- 7.5.

7. Enter hour and minutes for each of your activities. It is OK if you go over 24 hours- that is life in the 21st century. Your spreadsheet may look like this example.

Use a decimal fraction for minutes.

If you do your chores for 30 minutes a day type .5.

8. Next, total up your hours. Highlight all the hours in column B. Then click the AutoSum button . Look for your total in last cell.

9. Change the font to Courier, 12 point font. Italicize the ROW headings.

10. Pie Chart creation- Highlight all cells from cell A4 to the end of your hour data in column B. Don't include the total. Click on the create chart button and select a pie chart.
- Choose any style of pie chart (exploding, 3-D, etc).
- Title your chart "Weekday Activities".
- Show percentage and labels for your pie chart.

When you get to the last step select "as a new sheet" for chart location.

11. Save your document as "time budget" on your I drive.

12. Now think about how you spend Saturday. In cell D2 type "Saturday". Starting in cell D4 list at least six activities that fill your Saturday. In column E enter the hours devoted to these actvities.

13. Total up hours in column E like your did for your weekday activities. Use the Autosum button .

14. Create a pie chart that shows how much time you spend on each activity. Save again. Title your chart "Saturday Activities".

15. Print your spreadsheet that shows your weekday and Saturday activities. Then print both pie charts. You will hand in:
-your spreadsheet that shows how many hours you spend on weekdays and on Saturdays.
-a pie chart titled "Weekday Activities" on a separate page.
-a pie chart titled "Saturday Activities" on a separate page.
